Sonic City

Curated By JAMES HOLDEN

22&23 NOVEMBER 2014

JAMES HOLDEN

Schedule TBA...

© Border Community
Last year, mister James Holden was hand-picked by Beak> & Geoff Barrow to be part of the Sonic City '13 line-up. When he then played a live set that blew our socks off, we asked him to curate this year's edition. And he said yes. Thrilled to announce Border Community's label boss, London-based techno sorcerer James Holden will determine this year's line-up. His album 'The Inheritors' played many times at De Kreun Headquarters. We're more than ready for a live version once again.

GOLD PANDA

Schedule TBA...

Hailing from Chelsmond in Essex but located in Berlin, Gold Panda evoked an underground buzz in the late 2000s, then he really poked his head into the world by way of a collection of instantaneously raved-about remixes, and in 2010 Gold Panda released his debut album 'Lucky Shiner' to critical acclaim. Since then he has been touring throughout the world, as well as releasing a DJ Kicks compilation in 2011, and a handful of additional singles. Gold Panda played at De Kreun in 2010 and now he's back for more.

NENEH CHERRY with RocketNumberNine

Schedule TBA...

The artistic strength of Neneh Cherry has never been in question over the past 30-plus years. From the solo phenomenon of Raw Like Sushi, to collaborating with her husband and daughter in CirKus, this Swedish singer has always followed her own path. Having now released 'Blank Project' -Neneh Cherry's first solo album in 18 years- she stepped back onto center stage to well-deserved applause. Blank Project is a perfect collaboration with Kieran Hebden (yes, Four Tet) and London electronics duo RocketNumberNine. Neneh Cherry is harmoniously combining vocals & beats and will headline the Sonic City Festival. We love Neneh Cherry, we do.

DEAN BLUNT

Schedule TBA...

We've had Hype Williams, the duo Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland at De Kreun's stage before, but Dean Blunt 'solo' is quite something else. 'The Redeemer' album is hypnotic, guided by his own voice, mesmerising and breathes heartbreak. But it's daunting wondering what to expect of a Dean Blunt gig in the wake of 'The Redeemer' . His live performances have been referred to as being 'weird experiences'. We must admit we're rather excited to see how this will tun out at Sonic City '14.

SILVER APPLES

Schedule TBA...

Having languished in obscurity for many years since 1967, the Silver Apples remain one of music's true enigmas. Percussionist Danny Taylor tragically died of cancer in 2005, but lead vocalist Simeon goes on solo and Silver Apples in some way remains a duo, as Simeon quoted in SoundonSound (http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct10/articles/silver-apples.htm) "I have hours of two‑track tape of Danny practising his drums, so I'm able to just plug him in, pretty much. It's not like I'm recreating him in any way electronically. It's still Danny playing''.

VESSEL

Schedule TBA...

For us, most artists signed to this New York TriAngle record label, don't need a lot of introduction. Vessel is one of those rare breeds of electronic artists using techno and house as a jumping off point, turning them into something completely unconventional and alien. Tightly controlled chaos that sounds like it's rhythmically out of control. We've had Vessel play at De Kreun before during 'Club Select' in 2013. Those who were there, will come back. We know we are.

TORN HAWK

Schedule TBA...

Brooklyn producer and visual artist Luke Wyatt is Torn Hawk. Signed to the underground dance label L.I.E.S. he produces smeared, toxic tunes that - to quote Pitchfork - ''can sound as though they were programmed by William Burroughs, garbled and diced to the point of mesmerism''. Torn Hawk gained notice for his visual work, self-described 'Video Mulch' but his 12'' debut 'Tarifa' brought his music to a wider audience.

HIEROGLYPHIC BEING

Schedule TBA...

Hieroglyphic Being is American sound artist & experimental composer Jamal Moss. Moss has long been part of the Chicago house/techno scene as both a Producer and DJ. This Afro-Futurist and noise-maker has been releasing music since the early 90s, starting out selling cassettes of his music outside nightclubs, then starting his own label (and sub labels) Mathematics Recordings. This subterranean legend makes cosmic / chaotic dance music that stimulates mind and body.

PYE CORNER AUDIO

Schedule TBA...

Martin Jenkins is Pye Corner Audio. He refers to himself as the mysterious and nameless Head Technician in most of his online profiles and emerged in the late 2000s from the British Cosmic Music scene.
While Pye Corner Audio might be associated with the Ghost Box Collective, Jenkins' music is much more difficult to pigeon-hole. Pye Corner Audio first popped up through his self-released Black Mill Tapes in 2010, PCA reminds us of Boards of Canada and Demdike Stare, and the last thing we heard is that they were supporting Mogwai on the final leg of their European tour. Intriguingly nice, no?

ZOMBIE ZOMBIE

Schedule TBA...

Zombie Zombie is a Parisian duo made up of Etienne Jaumet on analog synths and -the fantastically named- Cosmic Neman on drums and percussion. Zombie Zombie brings inventive electro-psychedelics and savage soundscapes to the stage. Zombie Zombie live at Sonic City '14 promises to be a sci-fi fright-fest of slasher-flick keys and electronics, structured around a Krautrock backbone.
