The THURSTON MOORE BAND

Sunday

© The Thurston Moore Band
The Thurston Moore Band is Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on the bass, drummer Steve Shelley, James Sedwards on guitar and oh yeah, Thurston Moore. The gig? Expect songs from last year's 'The Best Day' and we guess also some tunes that will appear on ''Rock 'n Roll Consciousness'' that is to appear next year. We've seen TMB happen at Belgium's Cactus Festival this summer. And damn it was the right amount of loud and noisy.

The POP GROUP

Saturday

When The Pop Group released 'Citizen Zombie', their first LP in over three decades, for a second there, the world stopped spinning. 'Citizen Zombie', following 1980's 'How Much Longer do we Tolerate Mass Murder' put The Pop Group back on the map. And they're coming straight for you on Sonic City Saturday.

CHELSEA WOLFE

Saturday

© Chelsea Wolfe
LA-based Chelsea Wolfe's sound brings synthesized, doom-drenched electric folk to the Sonic City stage. Chelsea Wolfe's music is hard to pigeonhole, as elements of doom, drone, black metal, gothic rock and dark ambient can be noted from her debut 'The Grime and the Glow' to her last 'Pain is Beauty'-album. She has a fourth full length album 'Abyss' coming out in August '15 on Sargent House.

VIET CONG

Saturday

Canadian band Viet Cong - consisting of ex-members of the lo-fi band Women - will curate Sonic City #8. This eclectic 2-day music fest takes yet another turn, as last year's James Holden-curated edition brought a lot of DJ's and producers to the stage. This year, we welcome a lot of heavy-on-the-guitar bands. Sonic City 2015 curated by Viet Cong.

LIGHTNING BOLT

Sunday

''Lightning Bolt has been around for almost two decades, and their basic formula hasn't changed: Brian Chippendale still bashes his drums with chaotic precision and bassist Brian Gibson manages to make four string sound like many more.'' These two, from Providence USA, recently brought out 'Fantasy Empire' as their first LP in five years and add some loud, brutal noise to the Sonic City bill.

FIDLAR

Saturday

FIDLAR (stands for 'Fuck It Dog's Life's A Risk') hails from California and brings some more garage punk to the Sonic City stage. For these guys, that couldn't be too hard, because punk is in their genes! Drummer Max Kuehn and guitarist Elvis Kuehn's father is Greg, who played keys with the legendary punk band T.S.O.L .

THE SOFT MOON

Saturday

Mauro Pawlowski: ''Renewed Wave is the ideal EBM opening dance for a pagan wedding - dress code black. But also the ideal soundtrack for a wild orgy with the guests, including you.''

TOTAL CONTROL

Sunday

The only Australian act at Sonic City Festival. Post-punk straight from Melbourne, down under! The band's line-up included Mikey Young (guitar, keys), Dan Stewart (vocals), Al Montfort (guitar), Zephyr Pavey (bass) and James Vinciguerra on drums. As Pitchfork liked to state: ''Total Control are fice Melbourne men dead-set on pumping life into the spiritual tradition of post-punk exploration with little regard for sonic congruity.'' Ehrm .. okay!

HO99O9

Sunday

The Sonic City crew checked out Ho99o9 at this year's Pukkelpop Festival in Kiewit and was blown away by their weird mix of rap, punk and noise. Ho99o9 reminds of Death Grips, Bad Brains, Odd Future, but bring a lot more gore into the mix. The Sonic City Ho99o9 show must be one of the most exciting live acts on the line-up. Be scared!

METZ

Saturday

Metz is a noise rock outfit from Toronto, Canada consisting of Alex Edkins on guitar and vocals, Chris Slorach on bass and drummer Hayden Menzies. Formed in 2008 and signed to the Sub Pop label, their self-titled METZ-record was Best New Music on Pitchfork and had them touring with Fidlar and, oh, well, Viet Cong. Surprise Surprise!

SUUNS + JERUSALEM IN MY HEART

Sunday

Canadian band SUUNS curated the 5th edition of Sonic City Festival and then added Radwan Ghazi Moumneh's multimedia recording project Jerusalem in my Heart to the line-up. Now two became one and these Montreal-based outfits have brought out a full collaboration on Secretly Canadian (stream here). SUUNS and Jerusalem in My Heart is not just a concert, it's an experience.

DISAPPEARS

Sunday

Disappears, formed in Chicago in 2008 has played at De Kreun before and brings a mix of krautrock, shoegaze and garage. Disappears is Brian Case (90 Day Men), Boas-members Graeme Gibson and Jonathan van Herik and Damon Carruesco.

FÖLLAKZOID

Saturday

Föllakzoid brings a magic mixture of psychedelics, electronics and kraut to Sonic City Festival. De Kreun has been a long-time fan of the Sacred Bones label, which released Föllakzoid's 'III' recently. Spacey grooves and hypnotising psych for you!

SHABAZZ PALACES

Sunday

Shabazz Palaces is a Seattle-based experimental hip-hop group led by Ishmael Butler (former Digable Planets) and multi-instrumentalist Tendai 'Baba' Maraire. Shabazz Palaces is one of the few hip-hop acts signed to the Sub Pop label and featured on a Flying Lotus mixtape. Expect some chaotic grooves and distorted rhythmic elements in a not-so-average soul and hip-hop gig.

PROTOMARTYR

Saturday

Detroit post-punk quartet Protomartyr was formed in 2010 out of of former band Butt Babies, a duo consisting of Greg Ahee (guitar), Alex Leonard (drums) and later a trio with Joe Casey on vocals. When Protomartyr was formed Scott Davidson joined on bass. Consequence of Sound stated that Protomartyr ''blends the moody atmospherics of 70's UK post-punk with the raw sensibility of their Motor City garage-rock forebears.''

BO NINGEN

Sunday

Earning descriptions as 'acid punk' and 'krautcore', Bo Ningen features vocalist Taigen Kawabe, Guitarists Kohhei Matsuda and Yuki Tsujii and drummer Monchan Monna. Originally hailing from all sides of Japan, the four band members met in London. The band, signed on Stolen Recordings, made a collaborative album with Savages (who played Sonic City curated by Beak>) so, yeah, Bo Ningen: it's on!

COLD PUMAS

Saturday

Following the 2012 release of their freshman long-player Persistent Malaise— a triumvirate split between Faux Discx, Gringo Records and Italian Beach Babes—and now a four-piece, three quarters London-based, Cold Pumas continue to funnel kraut sensibilities via tangents of Sonic Youth and Women. This metronomically grounded quartet of pedants are a dexterous and invigorating shower, for whom early 2016 will see the release of their sophomore record, The Hanging Valley.
